Police Find Marijuana Plants in Baroda, Michigan

The village of Baroda in Michigan has one of its biggest drug busts in years.

Sunday morning, officers seized a large amount of marijuana after an anonymous tip.

Without that tip, police probably wouldn't have found the marijuana, since the plants were well hidden in a rural area.

Major bust
To the naked eye, the plants may look like any other, especially when buried among other plants in a rural field. But a field test by police proves that they're illegal.

"The buds, these are what we did the field-test with, and these are what came back with the positive results," said Deputy Michael Clark, Baroda-Lake Township Police about the plants. "Once it turns that darker color, that's how you can ID it."

On Sunday, an officer with Baroda and the Lake Township Police Department found 95 marijuana plants hidden at the back of a farm in Baroda Township.

"It was an anonymous tip called into an officer and he went out to investigate. He discovered the plants growing in the ground," said Clark.

Police don't have any suspects and are not considering the property owner, who was unaware of the plants.

Police say typically marijuana is in cornfields, because the height of the stalk helps to hide the plant. However, that didn't happen in this case.

The plants are estimated to be worth nearly $100,000 total.

"The average is each stalk can generate a $1000 dollars worth of marijuana," said Clark.

However, the cash crop wasn't fully-grown before the seizure.

The plants will be sent to the lab this week, processed, and then destroyed.
