She may be against it now, but Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago is open to be convinced to allow the legalization of the use of marijuana for medical purposes.
The feisty senator revealed this during the "fast talk" portion of Sunday night's PiliPinas Debates 2016 at the University of Pangasinan in Dagupan City.
"That is a sliding slope. I'd have to say no, but I am open to convincing myself that it can be effectively implemented only for those who are competent for it," she explained.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse in the United States, medical marijuana refers to "using the whole unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts to treat a disease or symptom."
But the US Food and Drug Administration has not approved this as clinical trials and studies are still being conducted. Only select states have legalized medical marijuana.
Scientists said that the marijuana and its extracts may treat numerous diseases and conditions:
Asked if she has tried medical marijuana, Santiago who was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2014, said she never tried this procedure. But she has been open about joining clinical trial of a new anti-cancer pill.
Santiago then said that she is open to recommend the anti-cancer drug she was experimenting on to the local Food and Drug Administration if it passes the global clinical trial.
She said she may even push the government to subsidize the pill for those who cannot afford it.
