Supporters of the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Act which will legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes vowed to work for the approval of the measure under the 16th congress and beyond.
"We continue to work for the passage of House Bill 4477. But given the election fever and other pressing issues, we are also preparing to continue the campaign after the elections and through the next Congress," the Philippine Cannabis Compassion Society (PCCS) said in a statement.
Kimmi del Prado, founder of the local chapter of Moms for Marijuana, which is now known as PCCS, said she understands that there are many pressing issues today and there is only very little time left in the 16th Congress.
"We know that there's very little time left. We are aware of pressing issues like the BBL, the dispute over West Philippine Sea, other bills already in process. And the electoral fever is rising," Del Prado stated.
PCCS said it also recognizes that the "the priorities have been set even prior to the bill [HB4477].
Hence, the society is now focusing on the preparation to intensify the legalization campaign in the next Congress; and to make its advocacy an issue in the forthcoming 2016 elections.
Meanwhile, the PCCS, which celebrated its second anniversary recently, said 2015 has been a productive year for the cannabis supporters and hopefuls.
"It's been a productive 2015 for the Philippine Cannabis Compassion Society. We have reached a significant milestone: the House Committee on Health resolved to set-up the Technical Working Group for House Bill 4477 or the "Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Act," PCCS said in a statement.
