Volunteers with the Oklahomans for Health organization have been working hard to get signatures for the petition to get medical marijuana on the ballot in November. They started in May and will continue gathering signatures until the deadline on August 11. There are tents scattered statewide with one located in Sallisaw at 603 South Kerr boulevard, between Braums and Golden Spur Motel.
"This year Oklahomans for Health is running an initiative petition to amend the state statutes. That means we only need (with error) 86,000 signatures, or at minimum 65,987 valid signatures. In 2014 with much less support we gathered 75,384. That means we can win, and winning is important. The people of Oklahoma need a win and the patients need access. This measure legalizes medical marijuana for residents with a recommendation from an Oklahoma Board Certified Physician. It also legalizes commercial medical marijuana dispensary, growing, and processing licenses regulated by the Department of Health. It protects card holders from discrimination and lowers penalties for unlicensed possession--" As posted on Oklahomans for Health.
"The state of Oklahoma will be reinvigorated with the passage of this legislation. Studies show that states with medical marijuana face less opiate overdose deaths, which will save the lives of many. The health of many will be restored and so many will have access to this life saving plant." Frank Grove, a board member of Oklahomans for Health, said.
"The economic outlook of Oklahoma will improve as well, as the medical marijuana access system will create many new jobs across the state. The state will save millions of dollars on court and prison costs, as well as make a nominal revenue which is mostly earmarked for common education. That means the money we make from this system will be going to our schools and to improving our communities at every level."
The initiative calls for a 7 percent sales tax on medical marijuana. It would primarily be to finance a regulatory office that would receive applications for medical license recipients, dispensaries, growers, and packagers. Any surplus would be divided up with 75 percent going to the Oklahoma State Department of Education and 25 percent to the Oklahoma State Department of Health for drug/alcohol rehabilitation.
"The research behind medical marijuana is exploding due to the lowered bar of entry in many states for researchers and scientists. Many Oklahomans have already eradicated their cancer with Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO)." Grove said. "Children who suffer from incurable seizures have seen those dissipate to almost nothing, whereas they suffered endlessly under pharmaceutical regimes."
If passed, there won't be any specific qualifying conditions in order to obtain a medical marijuana card. It will be up to the discretion of a certified physician. Homebound cardholders would be allowed to grow their own plants. They would be able to legally possess six mature plants.
Grove says that use of the plant has also shown to reduce the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes. He believes that the greatest benefits that would come from getting this passed will be the boost in health and welfare of the people of Oklahoma.
