Pennsylvania regulators have released a list of 23 counties where they will offer permits for medical marijuana dispensaries, and Lancaster is among them.
The decision was based in part on feedback from more than 5,000 patients and nearly 900 potential grower-processor and dispensary applicants statewide, according to Pennsylvania Department of Health Secretary Karen Murphy.
She called Wednesday's announcement "an important milestone" for the state's medical marijuana program.
Signed into law in April, it is currently being fleshed out, and is expected to go into effect in 2018.
A total of 27 dispensary permits will be offered statewide, with applications accepted from Feb. 20 to March 20.
Lancaster and most of the other counties listed would be allowed one, with two in Montgomery and Allegheny counties and three in Philadelphia County.
At the same time, the state will offer 12 grower-processor permits statewide, of which two will be in an eight-county region including Lancaster.
LNP reported last week that M3C Agriculture LLC is seeking a license to operate a medical marijuana growing and processing business in Leola, and have begun discussions with municipal supervisors there.
That group consists of dentist, poultry scientist and lawyer who were once Sunday school classmates at a Mennonite church in Lancaster County.
The law sets financial requirements for applicants, with potential growers and processors required to prove that they have at least $2 million in capital, and dispensers required to prove they have at least $150,000 on deposit with a financial institution.
There are also nonrefundable application fees of $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.
Successful applicants will also be required to operate under close supervision and use an electronic inventory tracking system.
