The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association has come out in favor of legalizing medical marijuana. The organization representing 212,000 registered nurses endorsed Senate Bill 1182, sponsored by Sen. Mike Folmer, R-Lebanon, and Sen. Daylin Leach, D-Montgomery, before the Senate Law and Justice committee holds a hearing on the bill Tuesday. The bill would not penalize patients for asking for medicinal cannabis, would not penalize medical professionals for recommending a patient use cannabis, and would set up a legal distribution system.

"We believe prescribers -- including licensed nurse practitioners -- should have all of the drugs that deliver any kind of clinically effective results available to use," said Betsy Snook, an RN and CEO of the association. It's important, Snook said, for prescribers to have the ability to have informed conversations with their patients about options for treating serious conditions. The Nurses agency also reiterated its previous position that the federal government should lower marijuana from a schedule I to a schedule II drug.

"Schedule II classification would allow testing of consistent grade medical marijuana in a randomized controlled fashion to ascertain the drug's risk/benefit profile for a multitude of illnesses and symptoms," the nurses said in a statement. Gov. Tom Corbett has said he is against legalizing the state legalizing the drug, but a spokesman said earlier this month the governor would reconsider if the FDA ruled cannabis has "appropriate and medical uses."
