Medical marijuana faces the next hurdle on its way to passage Tuesday as the state Senate considers a bill that would legalize the use of cannabis to treat some medical conditions.
Legislation is expected to pass the Senate, which approved a similar measure last year, but may face a more difficult vote in the House, which failed to consider it before the end of last session.
In recent weeks, a number of amendments to SB3 were designed to address concerns that access to cannabis would be overly broad. For example, the bill specifies that only doctors and certified nurse practitioners can recommend treatment for patients.
The bill also outlines an electronic monitoring system that tracks patients and producers. The most recent version of the bill is included below.
More recent changes included the addition of treatments like chronic pain, Crohn's Disease and diabetes to the conditions that can be treated with cannabis. Marijuana cannot be smoked under the proposal, but doctors could prescribe it through an oil extract.
A number of supporters, including potential patients and their families, came to the Capitol to be present for the vote.
Gov. Tom Wolf has also been a major proponent of medical marijuana.
