Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) is pleased that legislation allowing agriculture-related universities in Pennsylvania to grow and research products associated with industrial hemp under the supervision of the state Department of Agriculture has been signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf.
The legislation, House Bill 967, permits the legal cultivation of industrial hemp in Pennsylvania under certain restrictions contained in the 2014 Farm Bill, including a limited provision that exempts growers from prosecution under the Controlled Substances Act.
"The production and marketing of hemp could provide another revenue source for Pennsylvania farmers in the future, but we do not look at the growth and sales of hemp as a cure-all to the economic challenges faced by farm families," said PFB President Rick Ebert.
Farm Bureau is hopeful that the information gathered through research conducted at universities and Agriculture Department approved farms will help ensure that hemp production can live up to its potential.
"If the state intends to implement a worthwhile program of hemp research, it must develop a definitive plan that coordinates and prioritizes funding for research activities, so it is prepared to respond to challenges faced by those who grow and market hemp products," added Ebert.
Pennsylvania Farm Bureau is the state's largest farm organization with a volunteer membership of nearly 62,000 farm and rural families, representing farms of every size and commodity across Pennsylvania.
