Peat Moss

Seems many years ago that this was the stuff to use, and now it seems no one uses it at all, just wondering why, it's very available here and very cheap.

Lots of people use it- mostly in the form of products like Sunshine Mix or Promix. It does well mixed with perlite and a bit of lime- which is pretty much what those products are.

I think peat and perlite will be the least expensive for me, I can get lime also, just need advice on mix ratio, I found pro mix, but I'm better off mixing myself, cost wise anyhow, I'll be filling 6 5 gallon buckets at first, eventually 12

I think generally people use roughly 1/3 perlite, sometimes 40%. Lime... Maybe about two tablespoons per gallon would be pretty standard I think. Wet it and let the stuff sit a while after mixing well. It's not something I've done even though I really should because I have a lot of peat here. One thing I don't have is perlite, and by the time I ship that in I'm paying more than I would just buying Sunshine mix in bales. Sunshine mix has a very small amount of nutrient in it as a seedling starter.
A little googling should turn up lots of ideas. I think as a basic mix the idea is very simple, and from there it would be tempting to add a little of this and that and tweak things.

how much lime should i use for a gallon of peat ? there is 2 types of peat white and black which is better for weed ? 10 % or 20 % perlite ?
can u explain how should I cook this mix ? how long ?

good luck:thanks:
