Palm Springs Opts To License A Third Medical Pot Dispensary

Palm Springs City Council on Wednesday made official changes to the city's medical cannabis ordinance, allowing for up to three medical marijuana dispensaries, instead of two.

The council voted 3-2 to make the change, with Councilmen Chris Mills and Lee Weigel dissenting.

Weigel said he did not believe cities should be involved in regulating medical marijuana and that it's a state issue. Mills said he believed the two approved dispensaries, which are supposed to operate as cooperatives or collectives, are sufficient to meet the needs of patients in Palm Springs.

The City Council is expected to choose Palm Springs' third licensed medical pot operator from an original list of 11 candidates at its next public meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. June 16.

The long-awaited CannaHelp opened its doors last week, and the other licensed dispensary, Desert Organic Solutions, is on track for a June 5 soft opening, officials there say.

About four other unlicensed dispensaries are operating in Palm Springs. City officials say they're illegal and are suing to shut them down.
