Pa. Man Lights Joint To Celebrate Child's Birth

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) – Police say a new father faces drug charges because he lit up a marijuana joint, instead of a cigar, to celebrate his child's birth at a western Pennsylvania hospital.

Police aren't identifying the man found smoking the pot in a designated smoking area of Uniontown Hospital Tuesday morning, but say he'll face marijuana possession charges.

Uniontown police Sgt. Jonathan Grabiak tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that a nurse smelled the marijuana when she took a cigarette break in the same area, and a hospital security guard called police about 3:20 a.m.

Grabiak says the man told him, "I'm having a baby and wanted to get a buzz" and then pulled a bag of marijuana from his shoe.

The man was released to a family member and made to leave the hospital.

Smokings the only thing that allowed me to sit at the hospital waiting for hours on end when my sons were born. The best place to smoke at a hospital is on top of the parking garage. Lots of wind and you can drop it over the top and walk away if you need to.

If you would like the truth to be posted than post it, the cop being a liar, I can believe that, the press isn't the true story, I can certainly believe that also, but this is a news section with news stories of interest to people of this community, none of us are saying that this story is completely true and all of us can believe that there is a lying cop involved, we see it in so many ways nearly everyday but news is what news is and quite honestly with no harsh intentions how as with this news story are any of us to know that you are who you say you are, just because your sign in name is "father" ?

We're used to reading the claims of police with a grain of salt. At the same time we also read the claims of anonymous posters with a grain of salt. If you really are the father from this article I wish you all the best and Congratulations on the birth of your child.

thank you guys for the blessing,sorry it took so long for me to respond,we are still in childrens hospital and the baby is diagnosed with wolff parkinson white syndrome.let me begin with saying i love your orginization and support your views 100%,this story begins with my wife being life flighted to mcgees womans hospital two weeks prior to this press frenzy,the babies heart rate was 330 bpm,back and forth to and from hospital to hospital our lives turned up side down,not knowing what the outcome may be and my wife and family looking to me for support and a shoulder to cry on i begin to crack,a good friend of mine came to the hospital to be at my side after they tried to induce my wife,around 230 am we decided to go smoke a joint,not the best idea now that i look back on it but i was really stressed at this point,we did go to the smoking area but did not fire up,we saw two women approach from the hospital emergency room,as they approached us we both lit up cigs,we stood there for a good 5 min and decided to take a walk through the parking lot to toke,and so we did,after smoking we made are way back towards the emergency room entrance,note...i let my sister in law take my vehicle to drop other family members off at home or we would have done it in the car,as we got closer to the entrance we see one of those women come out of the doors,she looks over at us and runs back inside,then reappears with a security officer who escorts her to her car,already getting a bad vibe i stuff my less then 5 grams of pot in my shoe,we get almost to the doors and a police squad car pulls up out of nowhere,the officer stops us and asks where we are from,we tell him,he exits the squad car and asks us to step inside the hospital.he then asks us inside if we are dumb enough to smoke pot outside,looking at my friend the officer asks again,my friend replies yes,i was floored at this point,i couldnt believe he admitted it,he asks my friend if he has any on him,he replies no,all attention now gets turned to me,the officer tells me to tell him the truth or he will arrest me on the spot and search me anyway,ok look im not saying it was smart but i didnt really know what to do at this point,so i confessed yes i had pot on me,he asked me to give it to him so i pulled it out of my shoe,he then asks why we are there,i said im having a baby,he asks why did you do it,i said...and i quote we are having medical issues and my wife and child could die from it,im really stressed out and needed to calm down,i never said i wanted a buzz,he then proceeds to ask if i had the bag up my .....butt? not sure if i can say the word he used here,again i was stunned,who would ask this?i replied uhhhhh no,he then proceeds to tell me i wont see my child born and i have to leave the property,hes not going to arrest me cause i was honest with him,and tells me i have 20 min to get a ride out of there,this isnt a serious crime and a lawyer told me ill get probation and fines which i can handle,two days later it hits the press,oh and i did see my child born,less then 5 hours after this happened i just went back to the hospital and walked right in,since this i have been all over the web and news,even george lopez made a joke about me,im on cnn.com and other news sites,theres alot of bad posts about how im a rotten father and what kind of example im setting for my child,its ok to smoke cigs and drink alcohol but god forbid a worried father smoke a joint to keep his mental status in check,my child was supposed to be released today but had a episode with his heart rate,it went to 270 bpm,and they fought for 20 min to get it to come down again,surgery might be our next step but it is unclear at this time,most children with this syndrome never have a episode.but so far mine has had 4,hes on 6 times the amount of medication they give a child of his age and size,all i can really say at this point is man i really need to smoke a joint.

I'm really sorry to hear about your child's health problems. As a parent I know how you feel. Hang in there brother, I wish your family all the best, especially healing of your child.

As someone who has made my share of bad decisions I can sympathize with you though your decision doesn't sound that bad, just a case of bad timing with the women coming out when they did. Its good to hear you were able to be there for the birth.

I'm sure that the press jumped on the story just out of sensationalism though whats so sensational about it eludes me. We run bust stories here to show examples of the harm that prohibition causes. Don't worry this will quickly fade from the public's memory.

my thoughts are with you and yours, let me say I have been busted for possession of marijuana and drinking and driving, my son was 8 years old at the time and I went to jail for a month, when I got out I didn't drink or use marijuana again for 10 years, now my son is 22 years old and the day that he told me that I was a great father made me cry, see it don't matter what people replying to the story think, I would be willing to bet not one of them that say you are a rotten father even know who you are, right?

thank you again for the support,and im glad i got the chance to tell the story to someone,its nice to hear good things for a change,i thought about going public when this all came out but the fear of what it would do to my family stopped me,hence the alias,there is a possability of a law suit because the nurse leaked it to the press,and my confadentiality was breached when they said i was there to have a baby,my sister talked to the hospital administrator and they are worried about a lawsuit,but im not that kind of person so ill probably just let lying dogs sleep,man i still cant believe george lopez made jokes about me,and ill admit it was pretty funny,even funnier if it was true.you guys sound like really good hearted people and again thank you,and keep on smokin

Hey i don't believe i know you not sure though, But anyway My Husband and who was with you that night are good friends also, We just found out today when we saw him at the Station, He was telling us about your wife and baby, I am so sorry for what your going through, HaHa i can't believe he said that to the cop, Well then again look who it is...lol..I'm not saying no names on here because i want to protect ya'lls privacy, But if you wanna message me privately you can.
