Homestead Borough Council on Thursday night voted 6 to 1 to approve the borough's new medical marijuana ordinance.
The ordinance will allow a marijuana growing and processing facility to be run in the Waterfront development district, and a medical marijuana dispensary to be operated in Homestead's commercial district.
Council President Lloyd Cunningham said under the ordinance, a marijuana growing facility can only be on parcels in the Waterfront of more than 10 acres.
The Rev. Louise Benton, council vice president, said people who need medical marijuana should have it. At the same time, she said she voted against the proposal because she fears once marijuana businesses are legalized in the borough, someone will find a way to use it illegally.
Councilwoman Lynette Mariner said no one has expressed an interest in running a medical marijuana business in Homestead yet.
During the first two rounds of medical marijuana permit awards in June, the state Department of Health approved a medical marijuana growing facility in McKeesport, and medical marijuana dispensaries in Monroeville, Lawrenceville, Oakland and Squirrel Hill, among other locations.
