SAN CARLOS - A narcotics K-9 alerted authorities to a carefully concealed load of drugs. More than 100 bundles of marijuana were packed into a hidden compartment in a tractor-trailer.
A tip led Hidalgo County investigators to the tractor-trailer at a Stripes convenience store on Val Verde and Highway 107. That's near San Carlos.
"This is one of those cases where we had to act and act immediately," says Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino. He tells us the driver showed investigators the apparently-empty trailer.
"As a matter of fact, he was very helpful," explains the sheriff. "He unlocked the back door for us. One of the first things he said was, 'Look, the trailer is completely empty. There's nothing in here.'"
But deputies discovered the hidden compartment.
"What they did was they walled off a section of the front, making the inside a lot shorter on the inside, as compared to the actual 53-foot length on the outside," says Trevino.
Investigators tell us a lot of money and effort went into putting up the fake wall. Parts of it were welded into place. Also, the bundles of drugs were packed so tightly, you could hear the pressure released as packages were cut open.
The marijuana, which weighed a total of 1,700 pounds, was wrapped in layers covered in automotive grease. We're told smugglers coat the drugs in it to try to throw off drug sniffer dogs.
The driver was arrested. He faces drug charges. We're told the trailer was headed to Tennessee.
