Smoking or consuming marijuana in public places should be banned, voters agreed at last night's town meeting, reports the Cape Cod Times.
The town is the latest in the state to regulate public marijuana use after voters statewide made possession of an ounce or less of the drug a civil rather than a criminal offense.
Already Yarmouth, Mashpee, Bourne, Falmouth, Dennis and Nantucket have banned public use of marijuana, according to the Cape Cod Times archives. Brewster and Provincetown voters rejected similar bylaws.
Last night, Selectman David Dunford said the marijuana bylaw and its $300 fine would prohibit public consumption of the drug just as most communities prohibit the public consumption of alcohol. "This will clarify what's acceptable behavior in public places such as Nauset Beach and our ball fields," he said.
