Oregon: The Senate Votes In Favor Of Medical Marijuana

The Senate last week passed a vote that would allow medical practitioners prescribe medical marijuana to their patients as they may deem fit. This is the first time the US Senate is voting for the amendment of how Cannabis should be accessed, a move that has left many surprised.

The marijuana reform measure was under the sponsorship of Republican Senator Steve Daines of Montan and Democratic Senator Jeff of Oregon. It passed by an 18 to 12 vote.

The move has put a smile on many VA doctors. Initially, they were allowed to recommend cannabis therapy to any patient or even have the patients participate in any state-sanctioned medical marijuana programs. This was prohibited by a 2011 directive from the Veterans Health Administration whereby a veteran would only seek treatment out of the VA.

Merkley and Daines have since said that this is very inconveniencing and discriminative of veterans. They have argued that any veteran in a medical marijuana state should be given the same treatment as of a resident. The same has was echoed by policy manager for the Drug Policy Alliance, Michael Collins, who has categorically stated that the veterans should be allowed to discuss freely medical marijuana use with their doctors.

For the longest time possible, marijuana has been used to lessen indicators from traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress among others. These are two conditions that affect more veterans than any other person in the population.

According to Pro-marijuana activists, marijuana has its share of benefits and more so to those suffering from Cancer, HIV, and chronic pain.

However, the amendment is not in favor of having medical marijuana in other federal health care programs. Its ban on them is still intact until it is cleared by the U.S. Senate and to the House for voting.

That said, Veteran Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, who is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is not in support of the bill. His argument is that there is the need for more research into the benefits of using medical marijuana against the risks.
