Faculty and professors at Oregon State University are seeking permission from the federal government to conduct research on industrial hemp.
Proponents say hemp has many uses including paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, and food products.
In addition, hemp requires limited pesticides and grows quickly. If approved, OSU researchers expect the results of their studies will be available in three to five years.
The growing and distribution of industrial hemp is regulated by the Federal Controlled Substances Act.
Jay Noller is head of the crop and soil science department at OSU. He says the seeds they are looking to acquire will be extremely low in the psychoactive ingredient THC.
Noller: "So it does not have the Schedule 1 drug of concern."
Noller says thanks to Oregon Congressional Delegation and the 2014 Farm Bill, higher education institutions are allowed to conduct research if the school is located in a state where hemp cultivation is legal.
