A proposed medical marijuana dispensary in Beaverton is causing controversy with neighbors who think the shop is too close to a local recreation center.
Blooming Deals medical marijuana dispensary near 158th and Schendel is awaiting final inspection and approval from the state, which it will need to finalize its city business license.
"I think a lot of people have come to realize that we're not drug dealers in a back alley selling drugs," Tyler Walker, owner of Blooming Deals, said. "We're providing a service to people who actually need the medicine."
But the dispensary is just blocks away from the Tualatin Hills Recreation Center, and some locals said the rules that apply to pot shops near schools should also apply in this case.
"The closest actual school to us is about 1,500 feet away behind the McDonalds, and it's a preschool," Walker said. "Other than that we are zoned correctly and we are in an operational school free zone."
Walker said the City of Beaverton has already looked at the issue and determined the rec center is not a school, and therefore the city has no reason to deny them a business license.
KOIN 6 News spoke with Bob Wayt, the communications director of the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District, who said he is on the sidelines when it comes to the new medical marijuana dispensary.
Neighboring business owners admitted to having initial concerns regarding the dispensary, but after learning more about the business, said they've come around. The building owner called Blooming Deals a "quality operation," and said the selling of medical marijuana on his property is a "non-issue."
