Portland, Oregon - The second annual Oregon Medical Cannabis Awards was a
success despite last minute attempts by the DEA (Drug Enforcement
Administration) to prevent it!
There was a highly visible Portland Police Bureau presence throughout the
entire event. There were officers present before the Organizing Committee
even arrived, and at least one officer was still at the Double Tree until
11:30 pm!
{An interesting expenditure of scarce budget resources as well as human
(officer) resources}
Reporters from the Willamette Week and KOIN Channel 6 television interviewed
a number of people, including Organizing Committee members, participants,
and attendees. Unfortunately, no members of the press were present at the
Awards Banquet.
Trophies for this year's Awards were custom-made, hand-blown glass,
vase-like cups by a well-known local glass artist.
Following a few moments of silence in respect for all the prisoners of the
War On Some Drugs & Drug Users, Organizing Committee Chair Steven M. Cooper
awarded a special trophy for efforts above and beyond the call of duty to
Oregon NORML Legal Director Paul Loney, for his successful efforts to muster
support for the continuation of the OMCA 2003 event.
The Awards
The Oregon Medical Cannabis Awards =AD the only such event known to be held=
in
the United States =AD has been organized to gather data on strains available
in Oregon and which symptoms each strain is most effective relieving.
Third Place was awarded to Smoke Dogg, for the strain "Berkley". Berkley
was grown indoors, in soil, using an organic mix of fertilizers. This
strain was developed in Berkley, California, for medicinal use.
The Second Place award went to Chris, for a strain called "PK-71". This
strain is said to have been developed in the late 1930s or early 1940s,
during WW II, in Germany, for treatment of burn patients. PK-71 is unusual
for it's 'machine oil' aroma & lack of any taste.
The First Place OMCA 2003 trophy was awarded to Stoney Girl, for her 'Sugar
Plum' strain. Stoney Girl bred this Award-winning strain from two other
strains she developed, Berkley Blue (Berkley x Blueberry) and Haze Plum
(Haze x Plum). The most remarkable item concerning this strain is the
35-day flowering-to-harvest!
Stoney Girl was also the first place winner in the first OMCA, in 2002. Her
winning strain last year was Northern Lights #5.
Data gathered from this event will be combined with the data from the first
annual OMCA and will be available soon on the Oregon NORML website
www.OrNORML.org <Oregon NORML | Dedicated to promoting positive legal, social, and political change in support of cannabis and the many adults who use it.> as soon as possible, along with
information about the tabulation process.
