One Bixby man says he wants more Christians to learn about the benefits of medical marijuana. He says he's launching a "Christian Challenge," calling for education among church congregations.
Robert Portillo says it's by the grace of god that he's able to promote a controversial topic in one of Oklahoma's most crucial demographics. He says education starts with church leadership.
For Portillo and his wife Joan, God has been a way of life. Unfortunately, so has pain.
"She has had chronic pain, fibromyalgia, for 20 years," said Portillo.
With medications making Joan sick and even falling asleep at the drop of a hat, they hope another solution is out there. So Robert is putting his faith into medical marijuana and now it's his mission to change the Christian tone on the topic.
"Their basic Christian belief or fundamental beliefs, puts them in a position where they have to make an active decision to refuse medical aid to somebody, and I just can't see a Christian doing that," he said.
He's created a YouTube video called "Green the Vote Oklahoma: Christian Challenge," calling for church leadership to educate themselves and pass the information along.
"By educating themselves on what medical marijuana offers, ministers need to step up and allow ministerial lines to schedule someone to come in and talk to them about the benefits so that the congregation knows there's no taboo there if they decide to seek that treatment," he said.
Portillo hopes to sway the Christian vote if the legalization measure finds its way on a ballot, but many church-goers aren't convinced.
"As far as getting involved inside a church and people backing it up in a church, it kind of goes against everything the church stands for," said Nate Wynn.
"To be honest with you, I feel real uncomfortable with them doing that, and I just don't think it belongs in a church," said Loyd Furr.
Portillo says Joan has never tried medical marijuana, but he says they're desperate to try anything...and they hope Christians will join in their fight.
"Where they refuse to speak, Satan is going to get in and fill that vacuum. The shepherds have to shepherd their flock and if they don't, they're leaving it up to the world to do it," said Portillo.
Several people have been petitioning all over Green Country to get the measure of legalizing medical marijuana on the next ballot. They have about one more month to find 123,000 signatures to do so.
