The initiative to legalize medical marijuana in the state of Ohio is moving forward. The group, Ohioans for Medical Marijuana, says its goal is to get the amendment on the ballot and let the voters decide.

John Pardee says the issue won't go away.

"The stories of Ohioans that I've heard over the years just compel me to keep going because they keep asking and begging to have safe access," he said.

Pardee is a campaign coordinator for Ohioans for Medical Marijuana. It is seeking an amendment that would vote medical marijuana into law. The group is gathering more than half a million signatures to get on the November ballot.

"For once, Ohio actually has a chance to move into the 21st Century and provide safe access to this therapeutic plan," he said.

For Pardee, it's personal. In 2008 his eldest son was involved in a near-fatal car accident. Doctors told him he would be in pain for the rest of his life so the family looked at other options and found marijuana was the best medication. His son is now an expert cannabis cultivator in California. Pardee says his son wants to legally help others here at home.

"He wants to be able to take what he's learned and bring it back to Ohio and bring medicine to the patients in Ohio who need it," he said.

Legislators are considering House Bill 523, which would establish a medical marijuana program in Ohio, but Pardee says that law has too many restrictions. He's hopeful voters see the benefit to this initiative.

"Seventy-four percent of Ohioans support, so it's important we get on the ballot to let Ohioans know to chose for themselves whether this is right for them," he said.
