Marijuana could be back on the ballot this November in Ohio if state officials approve the language in a new proposal, and if pro pot groups can collect enough signatures.
A committee with Ohioans for Medical Marijuana will announce a new plan on Tuesday to legalize medical marijuana in the state.
A medical marijuana task force developed by state lawmakers is already exploring the idea though, and members say a possible ballot measure could affect weeks of research and testimony.
In 23 states people can legally smoke pot for medical use and this November, Ohio could be number 24.
"We will be supporting an initiative that would allow seriously ill people to access medical marijuana if their doctors recommend it," Mason Tvert said.
Tvert is the spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, a group that helped draft the language in the new proposal. The group says it has staff all over the country and on the ground in Ohio working to pass laws to make pot legal to people who need it.
"It's going to allow people with certain medical conditions to possess and grow limited amounts of marijuana if their doctors recommend it. It will establish a regulated system of licensed businesses that will produce and sell marijuana to those licensed patients," Tvert said.
The Marijuana Policy Project says this proposal is different from the measure voters rejected during the 2015 election.
"It was quite clear that Ohioans may not be ready to make marijuana legal for adults, but very much so to make it legal for seriously ill people," Tvert said.
It's the same message Ohio lawmakers heard too.
"I think the public has largely stated that this is something that they would like us to look at and possibly legislate on," Representative Dan Ramos said.
For weeks the Ohio House Medicinal Marijuana Task Force has listened to testimony and heard from experts.
The group is exploring the idea of legalizing weed for medical use. Some members say they hope a possible ballot measure doesn't deter the group from possible legalization passage through the general assembly.
"There are other states where they've done it through a ballot measure where the general assembly then, had to scramble to basically backfill all the necessary surrounding kind of legislation to make the actual ballot measure work. If we decide to move forward with a legislative path, which I think can be beneficial, just because it allows all sides to be heard, we should have the opportunity to do so," Representative Ramos said.
