Five political subdivisions within the Register's coverage area are among the approximate 100 possible statewide locations where medical marijuana could legally be grown from by next year.
The Ohio Department of Commerce recently released the businesses interested in overseeing a cultivation operation. The partial information available also indicated where, if awarded a license, each company would operate from and even provided specific addresses for some.
They include:
- The Summit Bonsai, 218 E. Ninth St., Genoa
- Standard Wellness Co., Gibsonburg
- Ohio Patients' Choice, 2300 University Drive E., Huron
- Trillum Holdings, 300 Lake Road, Oak Harbor
- Green Health +Wellness, Third Street, Sandusky
Come November, the state commerce department anticipates on awarding 24 licenses for eligible companies to legally grow marijuana in specific locations. This decision has been delayed several times.
Clearing up medical marijuana misconceptions
The inception: In 2016, the Ohio Legislature approved House Bill 523, which sets guidelines for a statewide medical marijuana program across Ohio. Gov. John Kasich also signed the bill.
The regulators: The Ohio Department of Commerce, State Medical Board and Board of Pharmacy will all play a role:
- The commerce department will oversee licensing of marijuana cultivators, processors and testing labs.
- The pharmacy board will license dispensaries and register patients and their caregivers and set up a hotline to take questions from patients and caregivers.
- The medical board would issue certificates to physicians seeking to recommend treatment with medical marijuana.
The users: People who suffer from one of 20 specific health conditions – such as ALS, Alzheimer's, cancer, Parkinson's, HIV and more – can receive a prescription for medical marijuana.
The substance: Regulated medical marijuana in Ohio only comes in the form of oils, tinctures and patches. People can't smoke marijuana under the bill.
The licenses: These permits are for cultivation only, allowing state-approved companies to grow, and not sell, medical marijuana.
The costs: Prices for a license range, depending on a proposed facility's size:
– Applications run from $2,000 to $20,000.
– Initial licensing fees run from $18,000 to $180,000.
– Annual licensing renewal fees run from $20,000 to $200,000.
