Cincinnati city leaders gave the green light to local medical marijuana operations on Wednesday.

The city of Cincinnati cleared the way for the project by changing city zoning restrictions. Under the ordinance passed Tuesday, the city cleared the way only for businesses wishing to apply to cultivate marijuana.

Full council approved the ordinance unanimously on Wednesday.

Businesses will still need a permit from the state. Twenty-four permits will be given out by the state of Ohio later this year.

Some Ohio communities, like Blue Ash, have voted to ban medical marijuana operations regardless of a permit.

Rhinegeist Brewery is watching closely.

The Cincinnati brewery wants to transform a 15-acre plot in Camp Washington into one of the state's first marijuana grow farms. The site of the former Kahn's meat-packing plant could come back to life as part of a plan.

The project would include a beer-cooling facility along with the pot farm.
