It will be hemp day on Wednesday as the Nevada Department of Agriculture holds two workshops in Sparks to gather public comment on regulation changes.
One change would require anyone seeking to amend an application to pay the same $500 fee as required to apply in the first place.
A second change would allow the state to evaluate pesticides for use on industrial hemp, and to charge a fee to do that evaluation.
A second workshop deals with the certification of hemp seeds, and adopts regulations on growing seed crops.
The meetings are at 1:30 and 2 p.m. at the state's Sparks office, 405 S. 21st St. in Sparks.
The workshops will also be shown in Las Vegas and Elko.
Northwestern Carson Valley is home to a 50-acre hemp field, which should be ready to harvest by the end of summer.
The Nevada Department of Agriculture describes industrial hemp as "derived from the plant Cannabis sativa L and is among the same species as marijuana. It contains a low concentration of the psychoactive constituent known as tetrahydrocannabinol, which means it cannot be used as a drug. The hemp plant is limited for use in textiles, fiber, forage, cosmetics, etc."
Industrial hemp has a THC concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.
The hemp will be dried and sold to end-manufacturers. Any extraction of CBD from the plant would happen outside Douglas County.
