NV: State Issues Warning About Medical Marijuana Tours

Medical marijuana may be a new draw for visitors to Las Vegas, but the state is issuing a warning. The confusion may be over the documentation you need to get inside a dispensary and buy medical marijuana.

Some medical marijuana patients at Nevada Pure are tourists.

"It could be 25 to 30 percent of business," said Nevada Pure CEO Matthew Gardiner.

Still, Gardiner says the dispensary on Boulder Highway near Twain Avenue is predominantly a locals' spot.

Ben Sillitoe is the CEO of Oasis Medical Cannabis located near downtown Las Vegas. He says tourists make up about 40 percent of business.

"I think it's great that we're able to help people from out of state that come here with medical marijuana cards," he said.

Now, there may be a snag.

"It was kind of surprising," Sillitoe said.

The state issued a warning about 420 Tours, which offers a doctor evaluation inside a mobile office for a fee. That evaluation can get you a cannabis patient recommendation that is valid in California and Nevada. According to 420 Tours' website, that recommendation and an ID will get you inside a dispensary.

According to the state's notice, however, that's incorrect; a patient needs a valid medical marijuana card to step through the dispensary's doors.

However, another document on the state's website lists other options.

"We hadn't thought they were doing anything wrong, so it was interesting to see that coming from them," Sillitoe said.

Gardiner says, to his knowledge, the tour bus hasn't stopped at Nevada Pure.

Sillitoe says patients have arrived at Oasis Medical Cannabis via tour bus. If they had that valid ID and recommendation, they were allowed inside.

"Everyone in this industry is very concerned about making sure that we follow the law and the regulations and also the public image, so we hope to seek clarification, and we'll do what we're told," Sillitoe said.

Medical marijuana dispensaries are in their first year of business. There are more than 20 legal dispensaries in southern Nevada. This is a new industry for the state, so the kinks are still being worked out.

Most of the marijuana tourists come from California. If another state has a medical marijuana program, dispensaries here are accepting the patients' IDs from that state.
