Spanish Springs, Nev. - An Incline Village medical marijuana dispensary could get one step closer to moving to a busy Spanish Springs strip mall following a decision Tuesday.
The Washoe County Board of Commissioners have already voted on this, and unanimously decided against allowing the dispensary to move to this location. However, Tuesday's vote could suspend that decision, making way for them to reconsider during the meeting.
The dispensary, owned by Illinois-based company Green Thumb Industries, is requesting another shot to move to Spanish Springs, at 15 Eagle Canyon Drive. Assistant County Manager Kevin Schiller said the company looked for a different location to place the dispensary and could not find another suitable option.
"When you look at zoning related to medical marijuana dispensaries, there's really a limited amount of available locations," Schiller said.
Some Spanish Springs residents are displeased with this location choice for several reasons. During a community meeting prior to the last vote, many residents voiced their concerns, which ranged from proximity to schools to extra parking and traffic near the location.
While there are schools within a mile radius of the proposed location, it does meet school-related zoning requirements, as it is more than one-thousand-feet from a school.
Businesses in said strip mall have mixed reactions. Sandy Lack runs SparksHelp.com, a business three doors down from the proposed location. He welcomes the dispensary, citing he prefers the added security that comes with a medical marijuana dispensary.
Dr. Mary Peterson owns a chiropractic clinic directly next door to the potential dispensary location. She said she does not believe the added security will be "as good as it sounds." She strongly opposes allowing this dispensary to move in next door.
"The people have spoken in this community, they do not want a marijuana dispensary in this little, beautiful, family town of Spanish Springs," Dr. Peterson said, referring to the previous decision to block the move.
The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at the Washoe County Complex in Building B on Tuesday, November 29th. The Washoe County Board of Commissioners will hear public comment before making a decision. Agenda Item #14 will allow them to suspend their previous decision. If that is passed, Agenda Item #15 will allow them to reconsider moving this dispensary to 15 Eagle Canyon Drive.
