Las Vegas - The Clark County District Attorney's Office is suspending misdemeanor marijuana cases following the passage of recreational marijuana legalization.
"I wish it happened earlier," said Anton McAllister, who was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession six months ago.
McAllister was booked for carrying two grams of marijuana, which is something that is legal under the new law. Question 2 makes it legal for anyone 21 or older to carry less than an ounce of marijuana.
"It'll help everyone in the long run," McAllister said. "Everyone won't have to be ducking and looking over their shoulders."
Joe Brezny, with the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana, helped get Question 2 on the Nevada ballot. Brezny lauded the announcement, saying it'll alleviate police resources.
"It's great that our prosecutors are seeing that it makes sense just to go ahead and adopt that policy now and stop [using] police resources when we can spend them better elsewhere," Brezny said.
Metro police, though, said they plan to enforce the current law under which marijuana possession is illegal regardless of the amount.
Metro arrested 177 people this year for carrying less than an ounce of marijuana. In 2015, the department made 146 arrests related to the same offense.
The district attorney's office was not available for a statement.
