LOS ANGELES: Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony, who charged with marijuana possession last week, said Thursday at a pre-season National Basketball Association game that the drugs were not his.

Speaking before the Nuggets' exhibition game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Anthony read a prepared statement claiming his innocence and apologizing to youngsters who see him as a role model. He did not take questions. "I am innocent of this charge because I did not use or intentionally possess marijuana," Anthony said. "I had no idea that there was marijuana in my backpack.

"I sincerely regret any embarrassment this unfortunate incident has had on my family, supporters and the Denver Nuggets organization. They have always stood by me and that means the world to me." Anthony, 20, faces a 100-dollar fine for the minor charge of marijuana possession. "I know there a lot of kids that look up to me," Anthony said. "I take the responsibility very seriously and I'm sorry this incident has occurred. The opportunity to play in and represent the NBA is a privilege I never want to jeopardize." Upon seeing the room packed with reporters that greeted him at Staples Center, Anthony said: "This ain't no murder trial."

The Rocky Mountain News reported Anthony was stopped at a routine search at Denver International Airport on Friday when security found a small amount of the drug in his carry-on bag. Anthony's lawyer told the newspaper his client had loaned the bag to an unidentified friend who was visiting from out of town and that the friend had put the marijuana in the bag. afp
