For this decade's first "Get High in Public So You Can, Like, Stick it to the Man, Dude" day, NORML will be unveiling a new animated billboard on the CBS Super Screen in Times Square. The ad will highlight the increaased number of marijuana possession related arrests in the past few years, and call for legalization as a way to stop the arrests.
Executive Director Allen St. Pierre said, "New York City police officers are effectively circumventing state law by charging tens of thousands of young adults each year with unnecessary criminal misdemeanors by claiming that the marijuana was possessed 'in plain view.' This is a shameful and fiscally irresponsible policy that disproportionately targets minorities and does nothing to improve public safety." The ad will appear 18 times a day and will reach an estimated 1.5 million tourists.
