A bill legalizing the medicinal use of marijuana received a public hearing in the General Assembly but no vote. The federal government provides marijuana to some people for use to ease the side effects of cancer treatments. The program was closed to new applicants in 1991.
Representative Earl Jones is sponsoring a bill that would change state law to allow the medicinal use. People who testified before a House committee said they used it for pain relief now.
Janet Osborne said she was frustrated she couldn’t legally get marijuana for her back pain. She said she wished she had cancer instead so there would be an end to her pain. A 66-year-old man said he was pain free for the first time since using marijuana. No vote is scheduled for the bill.
