We won't be seeing any new pot shops opening in Pueblo County for the next couple of years.
The county commission says oversaturation is to blame. In August 2014, commissioners passed a moratorium on new recreational dispensaries throughout the county and new medical and recreational stores in Pueblo West.
"This new moratorium, we're not allowing any new storefronts of any kind, whether medical or recreational, and that's countywide but that also lasts until 2017 so we also extended the time period," said Pueblo County Commissioner Sal Pace.
The newest ban was approved by the commission on February 9 and went into effect on February 10.
"For a number of reasons from public perception to concerns about oversaturation, we decided to just put the brakes on for a couple of years and let everything cool down and reevaluate it in 2017," Pace said.
With the amount of competition popping up in the area, current shop owners agree.
"If you're saturated out where nobody is making sales then you've got to drop your prices and stuff like this. That means you drop your prices and your taxes go down in the counties and the cities and we don't want that," Marisol Therapies owner Mike Stetler said. "We want the taxes to supply what it's supposed to, the schools and the districts and stuff like this."
As for licenses still pending prior to the approval of the moratorium, they will continue in the application process and all current shops that sell only medical marijuana are still able to apply for a recreational retail license.
