A New Jersey state senate committee will meet next month on June 8th to hear expert testimony on legalizing marijuana for people with debilitating medical conditions.
The bill would allow some cancer, glaucoma and AIDS patients to have marijuana prescribed by a doctor for help with pain or appetite control.
KYW Newsradio medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough believes this issue should be a medical and not a social decision:
"I think there are numerous medications out there actually far more dangerous than marijuana but don't necessarily have the political and social stigma and the hot button issue surrounding it and they are able to be prescribed."
The State Senate Health Committee is not expected to take any action on the measure next month.
Committee chair Senator Joe Vitale wants a public discussion before deciding on a course of action.
