Ridgefield Park - The Board of Education is expected to adopt a policy Wednesday night allowing medical marijuana on school grounds.

The second of two votes required to adopt the policy will be taken after a public hearing.

The measure follows legislation signed by Governor Christie this month that mandates schools adopt a policy permitting parents and guardians to administer medical marijuana to a student while on school grounds, aboard a school bus, or attending a school-sponsored event.

If approved, parents would need to submit a written request to the principal to have a primary caregiver able to administer the drug while on school property. The principal, school nurse, and superintendent will review each request to determine approval.

Before the new law was passed, use of medical marijuana in schools was not authorized, according to the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association. So some schools prohibited it to avoid liability.
