Nick Hardy's Skunk Works #2 The Giant SIP Outdoor Soil: Thailand!

IMG_7875.jpeg

Storm finally came in. Not much of one for these parts, this suggests to me the mesh I put over the airpot base is too fine for the root to get through maybe. The perlite wick is uncovered though - maybe there’s just not enough roots grown down through it yet.

It was cut out after that picture, sure of it.

Anyway she’s fine for now.

im not 100% sure that pearlite wicks as good as dirt ,I only used pearlite on the top of the divider that separates the reservoir and I have a cloth between divider and pearlite in my foot I used soil, the pearlite was to try and keep soil from leaching into water reservoir to easily .
My foot was 90mm diameter I suppose you could sit a 60mm bit of pipe inside the 90mm bit pack around the 60mm with pearlite and put dirt in 60mm pipe then remove 60mm pipe leaving dirt , so you end up with a foot with 60mm of dirt centre and pearlite around the outside 💁‍♂️
Im sure that would wick well

Sadly a bit late for that!

On a positive note the root will hopefully be growing outwards and when they do break on through to res should be plenty of supercharged growth.

No more top watering unless I absolutely have to. Make those roots work to find the water.

Always positive me 😅

She likes much better when she's not leaning into the wind!
The wind was/is coming from the other side of the bedroom, I guess the squared C shape of the house causes the wind to swirl but also there was already a bit of lean that way from her reaching for the sun. Slotted that handy bit of pipe in the handle again and counterbalanced her up. I’m impatient enough waiting 4-5 weeks to veg, this is an age already!

My latest idea (totally contradictory to what I wrote above) I might try top watering to run off.

Might kick the wicking process off a little.

I should be better at this, from when I was young my Dad would often say,

You’re really getting on my wick right now Nicholas”

🤣

Top watering to runoff is going to give you a pretty wet pot for a while depending on how well the plant is drinking. It's good size though so it will be interesting to see how she handles the water.

If you do the wet/dry thing like you mentioned earlier, the roots will eventually find the reservoir and populate it pretty well, especially given the wick's limited size. You might be best off watering it from the top and using the reservoir for emergency reserves rather than the sole means of watering. And, since the rez is so big relative to the ability to drain it you risk stagnant water which, especially in your environment, can bring nasty consequences.

You've got a bit of a hybrid there so need to make up your own SOP, but the plant looks pretty healthy so whatever you're doing seems to be working fine.

Oh of course! Its mostly bloody soil in there! I can presumably overwater it, although lots of perlite and plenty coco too.

I think play it by ear still like you suggest. Seeing how much precipitation there is too - we’ve had 15.x mm or 0.60” in the last 24 hours - that sensors on the roof so maybe only got half that but still.

She looks OK, bit battered, a bit pale for me old eyes but nothing of immediate concern to me. Just keep an eye on her.

Fell over in a different direction as a new storm blows in.

She’ll be divided up like @MicroGrowerMan ’s 7 section style by tomorrow morning!
Nick, thanks for the shout out. I'm truly flattered.

I've started calling it the "Seven Sisters" technique. In honor of @Carcass Carhooks™ I should call it the Seven Sisters™ technique. The sisters being the colas I develop on each lateral, with an additional sister grown in the center.

There is also the Sixteen Sisters™ technique that is quite appropriate for an outdoor grow and may help you with top-heaviness in the wind. It involves a circle of 8 colas on the exterior circle, and another 8 select colas on the interior. Because the pot and space is larger I can get 9 more colas!

I'd drill holes right into that upper lip of your grow tank, large enough to accept large bamboo garden stakes. Instead of using six small sticks, I use eight thicker, longer ones. I'll show you here:

I've seen outdoor growers (from a previous forum where I was once active) use this to expand the circumference of their pots with longer bamboo stakes, allowing them room for even more colas. This under-mounted scaffolding gives an approximation of what you'd get with a ScOG setup without the overhead apparatus.

Again, thanks for the shout out. It is very exciting to see some expert growers learning some tricks from an old dog like me!

Pleasure to have you here mate! I certainly would put myself in the position of “Expert Grower” - “Lazy Bulk Newbie” sounds better!

I await the bants from actual Expert Growers kind enough to (try to) steer me right here are the ones that give the most interesting reading.

But I saw your post to CL with the kebob sticks and was thinking of what an interesting idea it was as as I braced this outdoor earlier. Cross journal pollination!

So glad to be here. And good to follow you, Nick.

Glad you follow my journal, too. New journal coming soon, "Chasing Godzilla" may have the Sixteen Sisters™ compete against the Seven Sisters™.

Many experts here and my eyes and mind are wide open to what they are doing. That is why I get a big smile on my face when I can contribute.

That's in addition to the smile on my face the harvest brings!

I have 3 active Grow Journals - anyone follows any of ‘em is a privilege for me. Welcome to bust my balls like the rest ‘em. Like they’ll chime in - I don’t always listen 😂

Your work is most excellent I’m a fellow irrigation tinker - not here. Drippers when I tried them for a completed grow were a pain. First time drippers and first time rubber type pipe. Never again. I’ll tag you in a week maybe with what we figured is the best from various experiments.

@MicroGrowerMan

Irrigation is a passion 🤣

This is more about the new stuff might interest you re: irrigation. Always nice to chat to a grower about something that’s not lights and nutes (though I’m more than happy to do that too!) but probably more related to here:

Netafim cable is awesome - Ph is another obsession but this is organic so promised I’m not looking - you can get a doser but seem expensive to me even when I’m mixing 300L a time and using 150L I reckon, depends on your medium but you could figure out a range. Depends the slide goes up or down and the buffer. You have in the soil or coco

Thank you, Nick!

That is quite an extensive layout. Causes me to pause about adaptability to my cabinets.

Hmmmm ...

My main concern is portability. From Veg station to Flower station. Also to a little photo studio I have set up in my trim room. Then there is plant maintenance. I like the turntable system I have for inspection and trimming in my small space.

But you certainly have me thinking.

Are those rings in the photo emitters?

nick's stuff is always super well thought through.

nice touch. we have folk who use them with mobility challenges. i think they've even started showing up commercially.

i use shelving units as a floating floor in my spaces so i don't have to bend as far to work on things. i also grow in a micro style - hempy.

I took a look at your stuff. Very nice.

Yes, I'm getting more challenged in what I can do by the day. Just three years ago I was the strongest man in the weight room. Now? My cancer therapy has sapped me of so much. I'm still around, though. Stuff like shelves in my grow and the turntable help a lot. So does my friend Lawrence, who will make an appearance soon.

Thanks for the comments, bluter!
