Day #46 Auto
Day #11 Flip

A final sting in the tale for this tent today.

They really fk’in hurt they touch/bite you. & Co is as quick to kill them as she is snakes. About 8” long that one. Go about 10” I left it alone. Plants all flowering up. The Strawberry Auto I’m thinking about some back budding - more for stopping her going any more vertical. Dropping the height tomorrow. Buys me 4” which should be fine - no bleaching here please - BB’ing should arrest that growth right?

She’s really going for it with 5 weeks left on the tin!

Overall view tomorrow - some of the brancjes are as fat as my pinkie. They’ll support plenty of bud! 6 weeks minimum all round. Some as long as 8. No more thoughts of yield, Nicholas!

Bit of inspection, maintenance and decoration.

IMG_5641.jpeg

We have this seasons must have, terracotta coloured airbricks to replace the outsized breeze/cinder? blocks.

Had to take all the plants out for that.

IMG_5639.jpeg

There is soooo much potential in there. Just got to hope we don’t repeat that lock up. No more roots please!

They all got inspected but no trim. They are all flowering just gotta keep them alive another 6 weeks! Seriously some of the longer running ones which will have more space as others are removed could push the average yield way up!

<what did you say about not mentioning yield?!>

Finally they went back in with a little rearrangement from & Co who seems to be nosing her way into this one 😂

IMG_5640.jpeg

The transplant same/same - c’mon thoughts anyone? For me it was 90% dead before transplant. She’s just getting H2o2 for next few days, if she lives!

Gee64 had two plants that overdeveloped res roots. He took them off sub-irrigation. The one he shaved the roots and the other he did not. Neither plant has recovered particularly. I had issues with water roots too, that held back the plant development. I'm interested in the fate of your plant.

Thanks both!

For me, it seems never letting them dry out means less roots in the container. Harder to do as they grow bigger, but the roots grow in search of moisture.
That’s reassuring and makes perfect plant brain sense. The airpots never get dry - the res in the SIP would sometimes although not now - it barely takes anything still. The Blueberry barely takes 100ml twice a day.

Hmm yeah I think mine is going the same way. I’m going to maybe try and break the root ball up some more. Get rid of more coco. Its cricket/baseball hard right now!

Hey bro, theirs lots of different things over the web on this and its bugging my brain.. some say as you say drying out makes roots grow more and others say they do but thinner as they are stretch more.. others say it makes no difference..

My brain.. DWC and Coco never dry but probably have more roots? And this is just how my brain is seeing it but soil only needs to not fully but dry back enough to oxygenate.. and this actually slows root and plant growth as it's never done evenly so the outside will stop growing and air prune if too long whilst the centre is still moist.. Also in DWC when people put a air stone in the middle the roots actually leave a big bowl ubove the stone where it's getting too much oxygen then grow around the area.

Obviously this is just what I see and my brain has made up but I could be missing some main points?

That bit I think would just be the force of the bubbles? Path of least resistance?

My thoughts are it says something about the size of the res. Relative to the plant medium zone. These SIPs of mine are 1:4 or 1:5 I try for more but at least in part the weight of the coco pushes them down. The bigger ones I’ve made are more like 1:2 - 1:3

My thoughts, shared by others, is that "feeder" roots develop in the medium when top watered, and "water" roots develop in the bottom of the bag and the res from sub-irrigation. They are structurally different and seem to function differently too. Looking forward to some rootopsies, Shed, Gee and me. It also makes sense that soil fed plants will behave differently in these situations, than synthetics fed plants, as the synthetics are in the res feeding the plant, whereas if the plant does not develop "feeder" roots in the soil, it will starve.

That definitely makes sense 🙏 thanks for clearing that bit up. Yeah sips are different as they wick so the outside roots can still stay moist for longer? And stops that uneven/longer dry back.. it's just the dry back part my brain can't accept lol

Imagine soil in a standard pot.. dry backs slow root growth in my brain.. its needed obviously to an extent but not for root growth just oxygen. It slows root growth.. I wish @lootznbootz was still about because he had a water meter in his soil bed and was cutting that harsh dry back down speeding up growth untill the very end he started to have a problem but didn't get to see it.. miss that dude!

The CMH bulb that bust they're sending me a new one FOC from China which is awesome. All the better for selling 🤣

Plants all budding up. Dropped the fan on the Hulkberry yesterday. Thought I’d damaged her badly but she’s just misshapen like the Bruce Banners we grew. Blueberry airpot and then Hulkberry below in the photos. They are about average for the field on buds so far.

The SIP transplant has maybe survived. Some new growth maybe. The Blueberry SIP seem to be going paler all the time. I think I’m going to do a less invasive re pot on her tomorrow. See how she looks in natural light.

Day #51/80 Auto
Day #16 Flip

Tossed the Royal Gorilla started in a SIP that got a transplant. Adios. Just taking up space after a few days of slow slow hand watering from the top some initial new greening just went yellow. Seeya. Your sister is gonna go 4oz and you died. You died big time.

Here’s a Strawberry Cheesecake that knows how to behave in company.

Need a trim tomorrow morning. I have a 12 week long pool tournament starting today. Meh. 8 weeks off booze and still going so that’ll be dull. $1500USD to the winner though. What strain will see me right for todays play? 🤣

Nick

PS - those bricks are absolutely perfect for solo cups I realised better fit than my pallet even!

Bricks will work well at keeping roots cooler.
Looks good.

The pallet is great, drains perfectly and loads of airflow nice and cool but the bigger ones now have bits of bricks on them to keep them perfectly perpendicular. Wouldn't have that with bricks but the breaks will grow full of green slime in a couple of days from watering overflow.

Good luck in the tourney! When I played pool my skill improved the steadier I became, ie the more I drank! Ah man that sounds like a lot of fun! What strain did you select?

I think that depends on a lot of factors like aeration, temperature and the stage of growth and what medium being used? Roots actually follow the flow of water as much as they seek out moisture.

Here's my roots in coir fed 6 times daily and never ever gone dry. In soilless you should work towards increasing the rate of feeding. If you have a medium that technically holds 30-40% oxygen by volume even at full saturation it's almost impossible to over water a mature plant.

Letting roots go dry in any hydro method is very detrimental for growth and both peat and coir should be treated like hydro grown plants for optimal growth IMO.
