Newbie needs help sexing

Hello... so, yeah... despite the ridiculous amount of research I've done, I'm 35 days in and suffering from I guess a typical case of "omg wtf?!" ... so, wondering if anyone can help me tell the sex of these ladies (hopefully)... heh, I apologize for the noise in the photos... I'm actually a professional photographer but NOT a macro photographer - I shoot models and sports, SO... I had to kind of ghetto-rig a macro set-up with some strobes and an extension tube... but you can see what's going on.

Any advice or thoughts would rock. Thanks!!!

Keep on keeping' on, peace :)

Re: Newbie needs help sexing...

:welcome: Snafu, I'm sure you're gonna love this place. plenty of info and insight from some amazing growers.

waiting for those first few white hairs can be mind numbing, but you shouldn't have a problem telling once you see them appear. Im still new myself, but there was no doubt when I saw the sacks on my males. your plant looks nice and healthy either way.:goodjob: good vibes for a female to you. :goodluck:

:peace:

I'll have more pictures up tonight (LOL... totally blew out my dSLR batteries and tracking light on my 400 watt strobe SO... as soon as I go in for some work my on my sleeve (ink junkie!!!) and recharge the power sources that be, I'll fill ya'll in. In the meantime, enjoy some HDR (high dynamic range) imagery I did last night before I went to bed :)

Re: Newbie needs help sexing...

you don't even have to start flowering before you can tell sex. When the plant is mature, even in veg, they will show preflowers, typically about the time the nodes start to alternate rather than grow parallel to each other. 3-4 weeks at the latest and you will see those 2 little hairs, or some balls.

Well... been awhile since ya'll have heard from me (my apologies... heh, my life's a wee bit insane!) - but I thought I'd give you all an update.

So, here we are, now day 64 from seeds. Started out with 8, down to 3. Two were 100% male (and boy, were they gorgeous, I hacked em down after putting them in a separate space just because I had never seen a male plant flower before - so beautiful - got pictures if anyone wants to see, just lemme know), but needless to say, didn't need the males so they got hacked once the space became needed. Don't worry - I bleach the bejeezus out of the space the males were in before putting my two BEAUTIFUL flowering females there. So, at that point I had two absolute females flowering, and three females that were hardcore into preflower. The three remaining females stayed in vegetation and heh... they got freaking BIG!!! Unfortunately, I think they got too big for the pots/spaces they were in and as a result, they became C02 deprived, two of them started to show male parts - removed those two, waited a week and yeah - they were hermies that were out of control so they got hacked. I chopped them and hung them just so I could have a dry run at the drying and curing process before I had to harvest my beautiful ladies.

Well, about 3 days ago, one of my beautiful ladies went a little bi-curious on me. I noticed the pollen sacs before they burst, so I plucked them (don't worry, used a mister before the pluck and after the plucking), and separated "it" (ok, let's give "it" a name - I've been calling it Chaka-Cannabis lol, so now "it" will be Chaka)... so Chaka is in an isolated area (btw... my husband and I live in a 6 bedroom house in the middle of nowhere, thus all of the separate spaces - in case you were wondering), I got rid of the one branch that had all of the pollen sacs on it (and hey, new grower... getting antsy, I quick dried the premature buds on that branch and OMG I GOT FREAKING RIPPED!!!), and I'm keeping an eye on Chaka. Thus far, no more new pollen sacs - that said, I'm keeping a ridiculously vigilant eye out - heh, one thing I've learned in this process is that NOTHING IS CERTAIN UNTIL YOU FREAKING HARVEST! My other beautiful lady who is still (heh, at this point) 100% female is doing fantastic. She's slightly over two feet tall, and today she got STANKY - wow - I mean... STANK-A-RIFFIC!!! Happy smells, yayness! She's budding up like crazy (pictures coming soon - like I said, i'm a professional photographer and I've had to put my photographic resources into like... lol, you know, the photos I get paid for... freaking need to survive, sucks haha), I sampled a little bud from her this morning and heh - she's freaking potent now - I'm surprised I can even type! And yeah, I'm a new grower but by NO MEANS am I a new smoker... got 16 years under my belt in that department! I think these buzzes have been so satisfying because I created them - you know? And, gotta say - felt good knowing I was getting lifted off my own stuff that I grew myself, knowing that I'm NOT funding organized crime. Lil' mental subliminal happiness there. Respect :)

So the status quo: Three plants remain. Chaka, my beautiful lady and my gargantuan lady who is still in veg.

I'm still quite a ways from the real harvest, but I have to say - this has been one of the most rewarding and educational experiences that I've ever gone through. I have no intention of ever purchasing greenery again - if we go dry, I'm willing to wait - it makes it that much better. Tonight I will be germinating 16 seeds that I got from a friend of mine, he's says they're a haze but he says everything is a haze (about a year ago, he said everything was a kush... so yeah, he's a little self-righteous about his stuff, so I'm guessing it's not pure anything - good bud, kind and dandy - but doubting the verisimilitude of the brand name. We shall see.

You know what, ya'll? Life is good.

OH! Here's a quick pic for ya... got me a new tattoo about a month ago, check it :)

Ciao for now, my friends, thanks for all of the advice - more to come :)

and once more... yeah, i was told this but eh, I gotta see things to believe them - i will NEVER EVER EVER REMOTELY have issues sexing plants again - DAMN do those things show when they show! Just had to see it to believe it!

seems like you're having some unstable results, so I'm thinking it's strain related. What strain are you growing out? When I first started growing, I would have a huge amount of plants turn out to be male or show both sexes, but since I've been using good seeds, I've never had the problem, and I've stressed my plants severely with light changes, and just overall neglect to push the limits of the strains.

yeah, that's been one of the problems - this grow is random bag seeds that we've collected from better bags. at least this go-round i know i have a decent strain. also... first time grower... made a lot of mistakes, light leaks, inconsistent timing on the lights, bad humidity, bad temperature, moving the plants around a lot, my husband gets a bit scissor-happy (he's NO LONGER allowed to touch the plants! lol - just like he's the only person who isn't allowed to touch my strobes since he's the only person who's ever broken one)... guess you gotta learn your lessons somehow. i can't acquire seeds any other way aside from a friend who grows or bag seed so... doing the best i can!

it's like... looking back on the entirety of the experience thus far, i can pinpoint every single tiny little mistake that was made, but you can't go back in time. thus, we push on and try again :)

35 days then flower?
unless its an auto flwr, you prob. wont get what your lookin for. yes it will grow but not as well as it would have. never put a plant into flwr until the branches are starting to offset from one another. this will be the best way to grow a great plant.
cutting in veg only and when you cut a plant let it recover before inducing flwr.
please do take this harshly, take the cutting tools away from hubby. do not cut anything in flwr, the plant will stress and slow the thc process down!
peace
finding the proper genetics is key to success. using bag seed is frustrating at best. you will never grow bag seed again, once youve found great gennetics. i grew bag seed for 4 yrs, never been so frustrated in all my life!
you cant beat quality! i dont care what anyone says. bag seed is crap, i hope you find quality gennetics that show you what im talking about!
