A woman suffering pain from an injury arising from a medical condition had relied on cannabis to treat it, Gisborne District Court was told.
Forli Hollis, 53, who has nine previous convictions for cannabis offending, acknowledged she had to abide by a legally-acceptable treatment regime, counsel Amanda Courtney said.
Hollis pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and a bong. On both she was sentenced to four months community detention to be served concurrently.
Judge Nevin Dawson said police went to Hollis' home on an unrelated matter in November.
They found 71.4 grams of cannabis head in various rooms and a bong on the kitchen table.
A cannabis plant was growing in the backyard.
Judge Dawson noted the only aggravating factors in the offending were Hollis' numerous prior convictions and the large amount of the drug found.
The court has previously been told Hollis had suffered from a botched procedure involving surgical mesh.
