A man was caught out manicuring his cannabis plants while watching TV after police turned up for an unexpected visit.

On November 28, Barry Wayne Crawford, 50, was watching television at his New Plymouth home with a friend, while they trimmed the heads off a crop of cannabis plants.

The summary of facts said the police arrived at the address on an unrelated matter about 1.20pm and saw a 15 gram pile of "good quality cannabis head material" in front of the two men.

A set of scales sat on a coffee table beside them and another pile of dried cannabis plant, weighing about 96 grams, was also found nearby.

As police searched Crawford's house, they found a room where more cannabis plants were growing near the defendant's bed.

The area had been separated into two compartments by sheets of black polythene. Ten plants, which were growing in pots, stood between 50 to120 centimeters tall while another 46 ranged from 5 to 20cm.

About 32 seedling plants were also housed in the room, where heating, lights, a fan and timer had been installed.

A box containing 261 grams of dried cannabis and 0.1 grams of methamphetamine were also seized.

On Monday, Crawford appeared for sentencing in the New Plymouth District Court on charge of cultivating cannabis and possession of methamphetamine. He previously pleaded guilty to the charges.

He was given seven months' home detention.
