Officials from the Ministry of Health have been asked to take another look at the guidelines for considering medical cannabis applications.

Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne has asked officials to take another look at its guidelines for considering medical cannabis applications.

The guidelines were set up at Mr Dunne's request following the high-profile case of Nelson teenager Alex Renton, who died in Wellington Hospital in July last year.

Alex had been suffering from a form of prolonged seizure, known as status epilepticus.

His doctors were granted permission by Mr Dunne to use Elixinol, a restricted cannabidiol product from the United States.

It is so far the only time ministerial approval has been granted.

Former union boss Helen Kelly had also sought permission from Mr Dunne to use medical cannabis, but the application was subsequently withdrawn by her oncologist before a decision was required.

"While I am satisfied that on the whole the guidelines are sound, they were prepared as guidance only," Mr Dunne said.

"They allow for flexibility across different clinical situations, and are certainly not set in stone as some have claimed."

However, he thinks some further review review would be beneficial and he's asked Ministry of Health to take a look.

Mr Dunne isn't ruling out seeking external input.
