While a bill proposing to speed up access to medical marijuana sits on Gov. Andrew Cuomo's desk, the companies licensed by the state to grow, manufacture and distribute it are moving forward with plans in the Albany area.
Three dispensaries and two manufacturing facilities will be located in the area.
They will be operated by three of the five companies licensed to sell medical marijuana to patients with specific medical conditions under a state law passed last year. The companies are making progress on those plans to make their marijuana available by a January goal.
Empire State Health Solutions chief medical officer Dr. Stephen Dahmer said his company is on track to have the product available by January.
Patient advocates want earlier access. The measure sent to Cuomo this week, which he has until Nov. 11 to take action on, was pushed by those advocates. Dahmer said he wants to see anyone who needs the product get access to it.
"We're all in favor of getting medications in the hands of people as soon as possible," Dahmer said.
Dahmer said plants are already growing at the facility in Tryon Technology Park and Incubator Center in Perth, a town about 40 miles northwest of Albany in Fulton County. The company plans to open a dispensary at 110 Wolf Road in Colonie.
Dahmer said the company is expecting fewer than 1,000 patients in the first month for medical marijuana.
"It's really a big guessing game, but we definitely feel confident that we're going to have an adequate supply for somebody that does come through," he said.
Empire State is partnered with Minnesota medical marijuana company Vireo Health LLC.
PharmaCann, another company with out-of-state ties, has secured final approval for its medical marijuana dispensary in Guilderland at 10 Executive Park Drive. The town's zoning board gave its approval at an Oct. 21 meeting.
PharmaCann is based in Oak Park, Illinois, and has six medical cannabis licenses in that state.
Etain LLC also won a New York license and has plans in the Albany area. Etain is run by members of the Peckham family. John Peckham is CEO of Peckham Industries, a road construction company with offices in Glens Falls.
Etain has plans for a manufacturing location in Warren County and a dispensary in Albany at 402 N. Pearl Street. Company spokesman Steve Stallmer said marijuana seeds are expected to arrive soon. Renovations are ongoing at the dispensary and will be complete for by January, he said.
