Businesses seeking to become a licensed medical marijuana organization in New York will have an additional week to submit applications to the state Department of Health.
The agency posted a notice on its website informing entities of the new deadline, which is Friday, June 5.
The previous deadline was Friday, May 29.
According to the notice, the Department of Health decided to extend the application deadline due to number of questions the agency has received about the program.
Health officials have also extended the date for when they will post answers to the questions submitted by prospective applicants. Answers will now be posted on May 21.
The Department of Health launched the application process in April for the state's medical marijuana program, which is scheduled to commence in January.
To apply, businesses must pay a $200,000 registration fee and a $10,000 nonrefundable application fee. Applications must include information about proposed medical marijuana growing operations and dispensaries.
Later this year, the state will award licenses to five organizations. These entities will be permitted to grow medical marijuana and open up to four dispensaries throughout the state.
Two companies have proposed establishing medical marijuana growing operations in central New York.
Citiva Medical, which was founded by Colorado medical marijuana pioneer Josh Stanley, wants to open a medical marijuana growing facility at the former Seneca Army Depot site in Romulus, Seneca County.
A second company, Butler Evergreen, has purchased the former Electromark plant in Wolcott, Wayne County, and plans to transform the property into a medical marijuana growing operation.
