A company planning to grow medical marijuana in Seneca County has unveiled plans to offer aid to help families purchase the drug.
Citiva Medical, which was founded by Colorado medical marijuana pioneer Josh Stanley, announced its intent to donate at least 2 percent of its net income to Strains of Hope, a non-profit organization established by Stanley, to assist patients pay for medical marijuana treatment.
The contributions to Strains of Hope will at least partially cover the costs of medical marijuana prescriptions for families who can't afford the drug, which typically isn't covered by health insurance plans and could cost as much as $250 a month.
With Citiva Medical's financial support, the charity will also offer free treatment to children diagnosed with intractable epilepsy and whose families earn less than 500 percent of the federal poverty level.
"Having worked with families of sick children across the country, there is nothing more important than getting patients the help they need – regardless of how much money they have," Stanley said in a statement. "This program will guarantee that no sick child in New York will be denied their much needed medicine based on finances."
Through Citiva Medical, Strains of Hope will also offer patients reimbursement for transportation to and from dispensaries. The company plans to coordinate with the state Department of Health on ways to expand the program within the regulations established by the agency.
The charitable initiative is getting positive reviews from parents of children suffering from epilepsy.
Melissa Hilt, a New Yorker, said the program will help families address the costs of medical marijuana treatment.
"Citiva's plan allows parents to worry less about affording their medications and focus on what matters – their children," Hilt said.
Citiva Medical is one of 43 entities seeking to become registered organizations in the state's medical marijuana program. The company is planning to establish its growing operation at the former Seneca Army Depot site in Romulus.
The state Department of Health will select up to five companies to grow and sell medical marijuana. The selections will be announced later this month.
