The New Mexico Medical Board is proposing changes to regulations for doctors who prescribe medical marijuana to patients.
Local television station KOB-TV reports that some of the changes would remind doctors and providers to use the same guidelines they used to prescribe narcotic pain relievers when they prescribe someone for medical marijuana.
According to the Santa Fe Reporter, the guidelines also include "development of a treatment plan with objectives" and will require regular follow-ups for all medical marijuana patients.
Supporters of medical marijuana are saying that the proposed changes will make it more difficult for patients to receive the drug.
"There are people here in New Mexico that have limited means and limited access to health care," said former New Mexico Medical Cannabis Advisory Board Chair Steve Jenison.
The Medical Board is scheduled to hold a hearing on August 16, when it will hear from public about the proposed changes.
