500w would be about 31 watts/sqft. That would be about as low as I would try. A 600 would be ok.
What you should be more concerned with is PAR/sqft. New more efficient technologies put out more PAR and uses less watts.

To answer your question with a question. What do YOU consider a good yield? It is my belief that growing indoors the #1 consideration above all else is the light. It is one of the few variables you have control over and it will effect your over-all yield by the most. I realize this is not really an answer but lighting is not something I would not skimp on if it was me, budget accordingly.
