Plans to possibly open a medical marijuana dispensary in town have been shelved and a meeting on the proposal scheduled for next week is now off.
Granite State Organics, a nonprofit organization, informed the town Friday that it has decided against pursuing a license in New Hampshire to operate a medical marijuana growing facility, according to Town Administrator Nancy Wrigley.
The announcement came just days after property owner Todd Fitzgerald and representatives from Granite State Organics met with selectmen seeking a letter of "non-opposition" for the project.
The organization had planned to apply for a state license to open the facility after the state legalized medical marijuana in 2013 for therapeutic purposes.
Selectmen scheduled a public meeting on the project for Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Memorial School, but it has now been canceled.
The reasons for the sudden change of plans aren't clear.
Fitzgerald declined to talk about the plan Friday.
"I have no comment for you," he said.
Selectman Bob Donovan Jr., board chairman, said Friday that Granite State Organics offered little explanation for its decision to pull out, saying only that it wasn't going to pursue a plan in New Hampshire.
A different group proposed a similar medical marijuana facility and dispensary in Epping in November, but the status of that proposal isn't known after it faced questions and concerns from some town officials.
