Nevada's medical marijuana portal has been restored after the Nevada Division of Public Behavioral Health investigated a Dec. 28, 2016 breach to its program database where confidential information involving owners and employees of establishments was compromised.

The State of Nevada Medical Marijuana portal is now available so patients and caregivers can again use the online function to apply for an initial or renewal medical marijuana registry card, the Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday.

Dispensaries may resume using the portal for patient verification and point of sale purposes. Nevada medical marijuana dispensaries may sell no more than 2 1/2 ounces to patients within a 14-day timeframe.

The portal was taken down for repairs, according to a health department news release, after the Division was notified that it was vulnerable to a cybersecurity breach.

In a Dec. 28 news release, the health department said application information about individuals with medical marijuana agent cards, such as employees and owners of medical marijuana establishments, had been hacked.
All individuals whose personal information may have been impacted as a result of the breach have been notified by mail.

An investigation of this incident is ongoing. The ramifications of the data compromise are as yet unknown, according to Thursday's news release.
