A K-9 deputy with Carson City Sheriff's Office is being credited with the discovery of 10.5 pounds of marijuana.

K-9 Rex was working with the Special Enforcement Team of the sheriff's office when the marijuana was found during a traffic stop Friday.

Authorities made the announcement in a Facebook post.

"K-9 Rex and his handler (Deputy Jeff) Pullen have become a vital element to the success of the team," team members said in announcing the bust.

Further details of the bust were not immediately known Saturday.

Rex, a Belgian Malinois, joined the sheriff's office in 2012.

"Since Rex started working he has been used numerous times to search houses and vehicles for illegal narcotics," his biography states.

"Rex has also been deployed in handler protection and criminal apprehension."

"He is a very fun, playful, high energy dog that is always ready to work," the biography also states.

Rex is certified in criminal apprehension, tracking and drug detection.

Carson's Special Enforcement Team works to "identify, arrest, and successfully prosecute criminal cases focusing on street level illegal drugs, dismantling criminal groups committing crime, and impacting areas of recurring criminal activity," according to its mission statement.
