Hello guys! First time posting, just starting up myself. Have wanted to for awhile. I plan on using one of my closets, and I have been tossing around so many different ideas on how to set this up. I already have most of the stuff I need, and my seeds should be arriving in 4 or 5 days. Would like to get the rest all set up for when they arrive. They will also be auto's for my first few grows.

I already have:
Two 300w LED's, chains, etc.
4 10'' planters, and Fox farm ocean soil
Digital pH meter, and pH up and down
A fan.
White Widow XTRM + Bianca Auto Fem seeds on the way

I will still be getting some perlite, a nice filter for smell, some bottles of nutrients, not sure which kind yet but I did read a few good ones around this forum. I would like to keep it around 4 plants at a time, and if possible I was going to try to make the box adjustable to the sizes I need, as I go. Here is a picture of my spot, and my concerns.

I believe my best option would be to use this stuff from Home Depot, basically the stuff in the 3rd picture but a bit thinner. It would help keep it warm for the winter and it is reflective. Would this option be my best bet, and just use the 3 walls of the closet, and build 1 wall/door as to not use the entire closet space, and keep it compact? Will smell be a big issue trying to do it with just my closet walls, instead of building a box inside the closet? Trying to also save a bit of $$, and I'm sure I will need some plywood to set up a nice little drainage system also under it correct? I'm also have not built a lot of things before :p

Thanks ahead of time for any input, would love to get this going and ready before seed arrive. Just as if you need any more info!

Right on buddy, I m pretty new to all this too but looks like your on your way!:goodjob: Yea that reflective styro works great if your worried about heat and such. That flat white paint works super awesome too as a reflective surface. Air flow, temp and RH are very important things when growing so go get one of those little portable temp/RH gauges and keep it level with your canopy o green as not to heat stress your plants. Your nutrient schedule should suggest a proper high and low room temp, I use Green Planet and they cover everything. Remember the size of plant you want directly correlates with the size of pot you finish in.... So say start seed in the 10" pot, veg it for a month or so then transplant to maybe a 5 gal... Like I said, it all depends on how big you want your plant. I have one in the last 3 weeks of flower right now and it's in a 7 gal/ cloth pot, it's about 3'by3'. Drainage is super important, I try and shoot for about 10percent run off when I water or feed, so you might want to move them to water or place something under them to catch the excess run off..... Don't let the plant sit in the to off too long, or it will start to absorb the runoff and cause nute buildup.
I m sorry for rambling on, I m such a noob at this, hahaha, but I learned some amazing stuff from Jorge Cervantes on YouTube , he's got a great video selection and coveres it all! Good luck dude and if I can help at all just say the word:420: Oh and keep us posted on your grow by starting a journal, it's an amazing tool for review and assistance!

Thanks for the tips! One thing though, the plants I will be doing are Autoflowering ones. They will probably not need anymore than a 3 gallon pot the entire time, as they do not take as long to go from seed to finish. I 'think' the 10'' pots are around 3 gallon but I'm not 100% positive. I will start up one of those grow journals, sounds like fun :D

The way I think I would like to set this up, would be to keep the pots on the wood similar to how they are, but a larger plank of wood with holes, that can drain down into a small little plastic bin to catch drainage. Or something similar. I'm probably overthinking it all :p but I just want to get it right from the start before I go.

White paint was what I was originally going to go with, but, winter is coming and it will be getting cold. Already starting to. I think that foam insulation/reflective side is my best option, covering each wall with that, and making a door with that and plywood. Maybe use plywood across the trim like it is in the picture, with the holes for draining.

Yea your right, that pot size should do just fine, but if you want some wicked auto info check out Atrain or Rifleman s grows, these dudes know their shit! Your wood plank ider sound great too, love it! Your on the ball man, it's imperative to have all your ducks in a row before ya start, believe me I know, my first grow was a gong show!:lot-o-toke:

Hey Doliz!
Nice sized area to grow your ladies. If the walls are white you can get by without putting up anything like the last picture. White paint is a great reflector and since you are using LEDs heat should not be a big issue. Here are a few things you will need to consider. Exhausting the air in your grow area. You will need to exchange the old air out and replace it with new air, since 2 things will be happening as your plants grow. 1- they will be consuming the C02 out of the air and replacing it with Oxygen and 2- the RH% in your tent will rise as the plants use up the water you feed them, the plants basically sweat just like we do and this will increase the humidity. If left without exchanging the air, you run the risk of mold and mildew and your plants will suffer. Make a plan to exchange the air in your room. As for smell. plan on it, all MJ plants have some odor and some can be down right strong and pungent. One way to control this is through a carbon filter attached to the end of your exhaust ventilation. As the air in your grow area is pulled out of the closet to either outside or another part of the house, the carbon filter traps the odors in the carbon molecules. It is always best to vent this air outdoors to prevent a humidity issue inside your living area.
For drainage of the pots just get trays that the pots can sit in to catch the run off, if using plastic pots, when you are finished watering you can either remover the water from the trays with a shop vac or with a sponge.

Hope this gets you started on the right path.
I find that no matter how much you think you know, you constantly find ways that you had no idea existed.
Don't forget to start a journal and link it in your signature also, it makes it easier for people to find your grow and to offer suggestions or compliments.
keep us updated on your progress :thumb:

Hey again. I'm seeing that air flow is going to be a bit more than I had thought it would entail! I still have not got my box set up, between work and Holidays, hopefully this weekend around the same time my seeds arrive. Before I go doing all of that, can anyone tell me what kind of fan and filter I should be getting? I was considering this one here, HTG Supply - A GrowBright 4" Inline Fan & Carbon Filter Combo , but after reading a lot of reviews it does not seem to be my best choice for the money ($135 after shipping).

I checked out a few recommended fans and filters on Amazon, which would end up being around $175 or so, but apparently are good, but thats getting quite expensive. What about something like this also, Hurricane 4" 171 CFM Fan + Phresh 200 Carbon Filter Package , Can anyone give me recommendations on what I will need, and won't be breaking the bank too bad? Fan and filter?

4 Inch Hurricane Fan & Filter Combo
Hey man, with those led s it's gonna be easy to control the heat. Here s the place I picked up my set up, they are so informative and an excellent place to size stuff up.... Oh and the prices are by far the cheapest I ve seen too! You might want to get the speed controller as well just to have that option and ability. Hope this helps bro, anything else just say the word!:volcano-smiley:

Thanks for that, I checked it out but it seems they only ship to Canada, and I am in the U.S.

I may just get the fan first, then get a filter later (because of the cost of both together is kind of a big hit at once). I will probably get a speed controller also. Is there a specific brand of Fan/filter I should be going for? I'm guessing for the fan, Hurricane is a good one? Or I believe I seen Vortex also? Thanks!

Ahh sorry duder, at least you can use the site as a reference to size things up, they are very detailed in the specs hey?! I'm still new at this and don't have a lot of experiance with product quality yet, I d imagine you might be able to tell by how well they describe the parameters of its function. You know, being upstairs you might be able to vent it into the attic or right outside and not even need a carbon filter..... I guess it's something you can determine as you advance through your grow. They usually don't smell till beginning to mid flower. My fan and filter deal with both the heat and smell issues, where you just need some airflow and possible stink control because those wicked led s hardly heat up. Yea so a fan and a controller might just be all you need for now, make sure you monitor your heat and RH so you know forsure your highs and lows/ lights on and off.

Not sure if you can see the temp monitor in the background, I set it up so its canopy height to make sure not to cook the top of my plants.

Looking great! I kinda feel like I am over-complicating and thinking many parts of this. I always try to get things perfect. I believe what I might do it drill a vent hole through my closet ceiling and run the rent up into my attic. It's a bit more work and I'm not the best at that kinda stuff :p It's also not drywall, its slate and plaster which will be harder to do. Probably my best option though. Although I was trying not to tear up my closet haha.

I will be going to get some more things today after work like that temperature checker, could you tell me what I should be looking for in a monitor?

Hey man the persute for perfection is the sighn of a good grower:thumb:, your gonna learn sooo much along the way, there are so many variables to consider when you learn to fine tune your growing process! I read about an hour or so a day on techniques and proper practices. You know about PH and EC importance hey, more PH than EC? What kind of nutrients are you gonna run organic or synthetic? And make sure you follow the schedule provided for feeding... They ll tell you proper PH, temp( lights on and off), RH and how much and when to feed!
As for a good temp/RH meter, most digital ones are pretty dead on. You want one that records highs and lows, say for when lights are on and off. I ll find a pic of a decent one and put it up here for you to reference.

Ah great! I will look into maybe ordering that off Amazon. I got a nice pH tester already. Gonna swing by the hydroponics store today after work, check out nutrient prices and get some perlite, and maybe see how their fan selection looks before I order one online. Only went into this store once, and basically just grabbed some Fox farm ocean soil and left, did not look around at all. Will check on the monitors they got but I can't imagine it would be less than Amazon with my 2 day shipping :p

I'll be doing some nice autoflowering seeds actually. Do you know a lot about those by chance? I know the cycles and nutrients and such are completely different.

Never grown an auto, but I know there not something you should expect a lot from the first time growing..... You can keep your light cycle at say 18/6 and not have to worry about switching to 12/12, they start to flower on their own when the re designed to flower. As for training an auto, gees man you gotta know what your doing!! Every time you do something it risks the chance of stunting the growth process, like for instance topping/Fiming and LST, if not done "gingerly" it could just stifle the whole auto process and drag out grow time. If that's the case you d be better off just going fem and training the shit out of em, like what I did with that girl above. I veged that girl for 9 weeks and expect about 9 weeks to flower right out. And remember too, the top buds will mature quicker then the bottom ones so 2 harvests may be essential for uniformed bud development. Don't rely on time to designate harvest either, get a 50/100 times zoom jewellers micro scope to check out the trichomes(thc/cbd bags lol) you want them milky white with say 20 percent Amber, the more Amber the more "couch stone" you get. The more Amber the more comatosed you get, (if that's what your looking for). I personally like a motivational high that Spurs the ol creativity.
Dang I get yappy hey, lol sorry dude!

Oh and for nutrients for autos, they stay the same, just follow the feeding schedule the company provides and adapt it to your grow time. Say for instance start out with a weak solution at first like the ll advise and remember to flush the last week or two. That fox farm soil you grabbed, does it say anything about being organic? From what I know, synthetic will kill the organic benificial s so it's pointless trying for organic if your running synthetic nutrients. Something to consider maybe.... I d almost advise synthetic nutrients for ease and problem free start. Totally up too you brobama!:Namaste:

Lol no problem, I'd like to learn all I can. I even have Skype if you want to text chat on there, or any other messenger. The Fox Farm soil is supposed to be one of the top organic soils people used. Got that from the hydroponics store. I believe the nutrients are the same, but only like 1/4 to 1/2 the amount as normal.

Will check out your journal also. I gotta get me a journal going myself. I seen a good selection of nutrients for auto's on a forum here, will have to pull that back up. Can't wait to finally get it going though, my seed should be here today or someday soon. I got some White Widow XTRM coming from amderdammarijuanaseeds, also 5 free Bianca seeds.

Cool man, definetly get that journal going, we all love seeing these fabulous plants grow and the spin guys put on em to make them unique! That's such a wicked strain too, lol, I m support to be getting seeds in today too! Not a hundy on what they are sending but I ll appreciate whatever they do send! I burnt up the first batch of seeds with reused nutrient rich soil I saved from a Hermi I pulled..... Something you might want to consider, seedling soil is pretty much zeroed out so there a no chance of cooking your seeds since they are so delicate. Stay away from time released soil or nutrients, another reason I run zeroed out soil is so I can control the nutrients and levels. If it has stuff in it already whatever you add will compound with what's in the soil.
Sounds like you ll be going organic for nutrients then if your fox farm soil is organic, awesome!! They say that's the way too go for big results!:goodjob:
