A Nederland medical marijuana dispensary is the only Boulder County business among the first batch of 136 dispensaries to receive state licenses to begin selling recreational marijuana next year. The Colorado Department of Revenue's Marijuana Enforcement Division released a list Monday of all the state licenses that have been approved so far. The list included 136 marijuana stores, 178 cultivation facilities, 32 infused-product manufacturing facilities and three marijuana testing facilities (see full list below).

To sell marijuana to anyone aged 21 or older, marijuana business owners need both state and local licenses, and only those businesses that also have a local license will be able to begin retail sales Jan. 1. The only Boulder County dispensary on the list is O Limited, 1 W. First St., Unit 1D, in Nederland. Nederland Town Clerk Michele Martin confirmed that O Limited is the business name of the dispensary known as The Canary's Song. The town has received a request for a retail marijuana license from The Canary's Song. The shop, however, will not be able to sell retail marijuana before completing its hearing on that request at the Jan. 21 meeting of the town's Board of Trustees. A representative of The Canary's Song could not be reached Monday afternoon.

The state Department of Revenue will continue to process requests from dispensaries seeking to convert to recreational marijuana sales. The state has 90 days to act on an application from the time it is submitted. Businesses in the city of Boulder are not able to submit applications to the state until Jan. 2, when the city will begin accepting applications for conversion to recreational marijuana. Of the retail licenses issued Monday, 102 are in Denver and many of the rest are in mountain towns such as Breckenridge, Aspen, Telluride and Steamboat Springs. Three were issued in Pueblo.

To get a state license, existing medical marijuana businesses had to pay additional licensing fees and go through financial and criminal background checks. Boulder County, Boulder, Nederland and Louisville all have passed ordinances permitting retail marijuana sales. Lafayette, Erie and Broomfield have moratoriums in place. Superior does not allow medical or recreational marijuana sales. Licensed Retail Marijuana stores as of Dec. 23, 2013
