During the week, the Nebraska Legislature started discussion on some major issues, including a proposal to legalize medical marijuana as well as the state budget.
Sen. Tommy Garrett of Bellevue, who introduced Legislative Bill 643, the Cannabis Compassion and Care Act, was unusually fired up during debate Thursday afternoon. Opponents of legalization criticized the progression of the bill and the amendments that they say have since changed the original piece of legislation. "We were trying to make the bill so airtight no one can abuse it," Garrett said. “Colleagues, we argue cigar bars and all kinds of things, and I'm not discrediting what we discuss here, but my God, here's something we can do to help Nebraskans who are hurting." Sen. Matt Williams of Gothenburg spoke against the bill, saying it would place too much responsibility on the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Williams said he opposes it with some difficulty because he has "huge compassion for those moms, dads and others."
Sen. Ken Haar of Malcom argued that medical marijuana is a better alternative to painkillers in many cases, citing the billions in revenue pharmaceutical companies gain from painkillers – and the deaths that painkillers can lead to.
Others, including Sens. Patty Pansing Brooks of Lincoln, Colby Coash of Lincoln and Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins, had positive things to say about the bill, calling medical marijuana a better alternative than painkillers for some patients.
The Legislature took no action on the bill, which will be on the agenda next week. Work will pick back up on Tuesday, May 12 at 10 a.m.
